One thing I realized early in teacher training is that a good lesson isn’t just about what you teach. It’s about when and how you teach it. That’s where sequencing comes in. Sequencing is all about organizing your lesson so that it makes sense to the students. Think of sequencing like telling a story. You wouldn’t jump straight to the ending without explaining the characters and the plot first, right? In the same way, students need to understand the basics before they can tackle complex tasks. That’s why a DLL that starts with a quick review, moves into guided practice and ends with an application task tends to work really well.

During one of my demo lessons, I planned a science topic that started with a short video to spark interest followed by a concept map discussion, then a group activity. I noticed how much smoother everything went because each part built on the last. If I’d reversed the order, the students would’ve been confused and overwhelmed.

Sequencing also ties into how students develop cognitively. We can use ideas from theorists like Piaget and Bruner to guide our DLL structure. Starting simple and moving toward abstract or critical thinking tasks. It’s not just about logic. It’s also about psychology.

When planning DLLs, I’ve learned to ask: “What do my students already know?” and “What’s the best order for them to learn this?” That mindset helps me plan lessons that feel natural and avoid unnecessary repetition.

Smart sequencing in DLLs leads to smoother lessons, better student understanding and fewer classroom management issues. And for us teachers, learning how to plan like this now means we’ll be more confident and effective when we step in our classrooms.
