What is a Lesson Exemplar (LE)?
A lesson exemplar is a detailed teaching guide that demonstrates effective ways to present specific topics. It acts as a model for teachers combining teaching methods and assessment strategies to engage students and enhance their learning experience. Lesson exemplars are not just teaching aids. They are tools for creating meaningful and skill-focused learning environments.
To ensure teaching is effective, teachers must use assessments that evaluate students’ understanding before and after instruction. This process should be interactive allowing students to learn through the lessons and the assessments themselves. For example, using written and oral questions that target various levels of critical thinking helps students analyze, evaluate and generate new ideas.
In science education, especially physics, lesson exemplars often incorporate computer simulations and constructivist techniques. These approaches improve conceptual understanding while addressing students’ beliefs about knowledge and learning. Research shows that students with more developed epistemological beliefs tend to perform better academically. What are Learning Activity Sheets (LAS)?
A Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) is a teaching resource created by teachers to help students grasp key concepts in a specific subject. These materials provide structured activities that encourage active participation and support skill development. LAS is particularly effective in subjects like mathematics where hands-on practice and mastery are essential.
To address gaps in numeracy skills, schools implemented teacher-made LAS through their Mathematics Program. This initiative aimed to improve students’ abilities in areas such as number operations, geometry and algebra. The results showed a noticeable improvement with students achieving higher scores and meeting numeracy standards during post-assessments.
Although LAS has proven beneficial, some learners encountered difficulties such as stress and barriers when completing activities independently. To improve its effectiveness, recommendations include adding guided examples, incorporating video lessons, simplifying formats and using multiple-choice questions with answer keys.
