Grade 1 4th Quarter Lesson Exemplars (LE) and Learning Activity Sheets (LAS)

What is a Lesson Exemplar?

A Lesson Exemplar is a detailed lesson guide that helps teachers deliver curriculum-aligned instruction. It includes sample lessons, teaching methods and assessment strategies to enhance student learning. A national consultation on draft lesson exemplars revealed that teachers need more support in understanding curriculum content, improving teaching strategies and refining assessment techniques.

Many teachers struggle with curriculum updates especially in subjects they teach less frequently. In English, some found it difficult to explain deeper writing concepts like “voice” and “reader impact” to young learners. Science teachers faced challenges distinguishing between concepts such as “changing state” and “dissolving” and needed more guidance on incorporating scientific investigations. In Math, teachers sought clarification on problem-solving approaches and how to assess student progress accurately.

Technology presented additional difficulties with teachers requesting a structured framework to track student development and modify lessons for younger grades. Some even avoided teaching the subject due to limited resources and time constraints. Lesson exemplars can address these challenges by providing structured practical guidance. However, ongoing professional development is essential to ensure teachers can effectively implement these resources in their classrooms.

What are Learning Activity Sheets?

Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) are instructional materials designed to guide students through structured learning experiences. These sheets provide step-by-step instructions, activities and assessments that help students develop essential skills and knowledge. They serve as valuable tools in classrooms supporting both independent and guided learning while aligning with curriculum objectives.

One of the primary challenges educators face is designing effective student worksheets that foster 21st-century competencies, known as the 4Cs—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Well-designed LAS encourage active learning by engaging students in hands-on activities, discussions and problem-solving tasks. To maximize their effectiveness, teachers must choose appropriate learning models and approaches that complement the objectives of the LAS.

A successful approach to LAS design is project-based learning which allows students to construct knowledge through real-world projects. Additionally, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) principles enhances students’ cognitive, affective and psychomotor development. The project-based learning -STEM combination ensures that learning goes beyond memorization helping students apply their knowledge in practical settings.

Furthermore, LAS based on problem-based instruction empower students to analyze real-life issues and develop solutions. These materials not only improve student engagement but also enhance their ability to think critically and solve problems effectively. Using well-structured LAS, teachers can create meaningful learning experiences that promote deeper understanding and long-term retention of concepts.
