The Limitations of Periodical Tests in DepEd
DepEd periodical tests assess student knowledge at the end of a unit but they have limitations that prevent a full understanding of student learning. These tests often emphasize memorization over critical thinking and problem-solving. While they provide useful information, they do not always reflect individual learning progress or address the diverse needs of students. To achieve a more accurate evaluation, these tests should be paired with formative assessments that offer continuous feedback and guide instruction. Now see GRADE 2 MELC – 4th Periodical Tests.
An effective assessment system does more than measure final results. It should align with the school’s goals, use different methods, and provide helpful feedback to both students and teachers. DepEd periodical tests serve as assessment of learning which evaluates what students know after instruction. However, assessment for learning through formative methods such as quizzes, group work and class discussions helps teachers identify learning gaps and adjust their teaching. This approach allows students to improve before their final assessments.
A significant challenge is managing the large amount of data generated by periodical tests. While the data can be useful, it may become overwhelming if not properly analyzed and applied. Teachers need to interpret the results carefully to adjust their instruction and ensure that students meet learning goals. Additionally, students should be taught how to use feedback effectively to improve their learning and develop self-regulation skills.
To address these challenges, teachers should combine formative and summative assessments to get a more complete picture of student progress. Clear learning objectives should be shared with students and assessments should align with these goals. Using a variety of assessment tools such as portfolios and performance-based tasks can capture a wider range of student abilities and learning styles.

While DepEd periodical tests are useful, they should not be the only measure of student success. Integrating formative assessments and continuously improving assessment methods, teachers can create a system that supports learning, promotes fairness and enhances overall student outcomes.
