GRADE 3 – 3rd Periodical Tests (MELC) – All Subjects with TOS | SY 2024-2025

Who Gains from DepEd Periodical Tests?

DepEd periodical tests aim to assess students’ knowledge and abilities after each quarter of lessons but who really benefits from these assessments? At first glance, these tests seem to be useful for both students and teachers. Students get to see how much they’ve learned and teachers can evaluate the success of their teaching methods. However, upon further reflection, both the advantages and limitations of these assessments become evident. Now see GRADE 3 – 3rd Periodical Tests.

For students, periodical tests help highlight areas where they perform well or need improvement. This feedback is helpful because it points out the topics that require more attention. Yet, these tests often emphasize memorization which doesn’t necessarily reflect a student’s true understanding or ability to think critically. Many students may focus on last-minute studying instead of genuinely engaging with the material. This raises the concern: Are we measuring learning or just short-term recall?

For teachers, these tests offer a snapshot of student progress. By reviewing the results, teachers can adapt their teaching techniques and refine their lesson plans. However, periodical tests don’t always provide in-depth insights into the learning process. They might not show how well students can apply what they’ve learned to real-world situations or how they work together in groups. This limits the effectiveness of these tests in fostering deeper learning.

Other methods, such as student evaluations of teaching or project-based assessments, can work alongside periodical tests. These approaches allow students to give feedback on their teachers’ effectiveness and engage in more hands-on learning. Tools like group work evaluations and assignment assessments encourage students to think critically and link their lessons to real-life situations.

While DepEd 3rd periodical tests are beneficial, they do have their drawbacks. To truly benefit students and teachers, these tests should be supplemented with other assessment methods that focus on critical thinking, creativity and active participation. By doing so, we can ensure that education goes beyond surface-level knowledge and fosters a deeper understanding of the material.
