Lesson planning based on outcomes

As a teacher, consider the knowledge and skills you want your learners to have attained at the end of their educational experience. Consider these three inquiries on the effects of your students:

  • How and in what ways have they changed as a result of the teaching?
  • What important ideas and fundamental notions do students now understand that are connected to your learning objectives?
  • How can you tell whether your students understands?
  • Which evaluations you employ, and are they consistent with the performance standards in the actual world?

A backward approach in lesson planning is frequently employed in planning and daily lesson preparation. By starting with the goal in mind, you can make sure that the learners remain the major emphasis rather than just the possible grade they might receive as a result of the educational intervention.

This planning model’s steps are to:

Identify the learning objectives you want students to achieve, including their enduring understandings and their knowledge and skills.

Identify the proof the students will present to support their knowledge and abilities. A scenario played out, a section of a crime report written, a memo written to a superior, or a mock victim interview could all be considered evidence.

Think about how you may evaluate student learning, both in the moment via observations, questions and formally by performance tasks, quizzes, tests etc.

Create a teachable moment in line with the goal and the evidence provided by the students. For instance, if you want pupils to be able to write a report, have them draft one. If you want pupils to understand the possibilities available during a situation, the learning opportunity should provide them the chance to actually explore the various options.

Create educational activities that support the goals you’ve set. This approach to planning and teaching is based on the notion that not everything may be taught and that what is taught varies from class to class. It is inevitable that you think about the fundamentals of what you teach and how to impart it in a transforming manner. Not all topics are created equal, so think carefully about what you want to cover in the training environment.
