What are Periodical Tests?

To improve periodical tests in, a shift from focusing on memorization to assessing higher-order thinking skills, like critical thinking and problem-solving, is recommended. Currently, tests are designed to measure students’ ability to remember facts rather than analyze or synthesize information. The framework for better assessment should balance complex cognitive skills with approaches that are practical for teachers. Bloom’s taxonomy provides a helpful structure by categorizing cognitive abilities on a continuum from basic recall to higher-level evaluation. Although Bloom’s model offers a foundation, modern educational psychology suggests expanding it to capture deeper cognitive processes. The value of assessing knowledge structures, learning strategies and thinking skills is important which would give teachers a better understanding of students’ intellectual progress.

Recent advancements in cognitive psychology, like the assimilative approach also highlight that learning is most effective when new knowledge builds on what students already know. To reflect this, assessments should go beyond traditional questions and incorporate methods that reveal students’ internal knowledge frameworks. Teachers would then be able to track each student’s learning journey allowing for more meaningful feedback.
