Importance of Early Childhood Education

The incorporation of kindergarten into the education system and the subsequent implementation of the Kindergarten Education Act have marked transformative steps towards nurturing young minds in the Philippines. By recognizing the crucial role of these early years in a child’s development and by ensuring access to quality education, DepEd have set the stage for a brighter future for the nation’s children, building a strong foundation that will benefit both individuals and society as a whole.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has long recognized the importance of early childhood education and has championed its cause through various initiatives spanning decades. One of its most influential steps towards this goal was the integration of kindergarten into the K to 12 basic education curriculum. DepEd’s belief in the pivotal role of kindergarten stems from its role as a bridge between informal and formal literacy catering to children’s rapid brain development and growth.

During the early years, particularly kindergarten, children experience remarkable growth and development, both physically and mentally. This stage forms the bedrock for fundamental skills such as walking, talking, self-esteem formation, worldview establishment and the development of moral foundations. Recognizing the significance of these formative years, DepEd has designed the kindergarten curriculum to immerse children in activities, games and play allowing them to naturally acquire the essential skills and competencies needed for their holistic development as emerging literates and to lay a strong foundation for formal education.

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), kindergarten is a pivotal year that shapes a child’s positive approach to learning and readies them for the academic challenges of primary grades. Hence, kindergarten teachers play a crucial role in guiding young learners through a curriculum that is not only engaging but also tailored to their developmental stage.

In 2012, Republic Act 10157, also known as the Kindergarten Education Act, marked a watershed moment for early childhood education in the Philippines. This legislation elevated kindergarten to the status of the first stage of compulsory and mandatory formal education. For public schools, this meant that kindergarten education would be accessible to all without any tuition or additional fees.

The Kindergarten Education Act mandated a year of preschool education for children aged five and above. Additionally, the act emphasized the importance of ongoing training for kindergarten teachers, ensuring that their teaching styles, methodologies and approaches align with modern educational trends and challenges.
