GRADE 2 – 3rd Periodical Tests (MELC) – All Subjects with TOS | SY 2024-2025

The Drawbacks of DepEd Periodical Tests

DepEd periodical tests are helpful in tracking students’ academic performance but they fall short in capturing the full scope of learning. These tests often emphasize recalling facts, leaving out critical areas like problem-solving, creativity and the practical application of knowledge. While they offer a glimpse of progress, they don’t show the complete picture of a student’s skills and growth.

One key limitation is that these tests do not fully measure how students learn or their progress over time. They mostly test memory and performance under time constraints overlooking the deeper aspects of learning such as building critical thinking skills or fostering self-awareness. True learning involves more than just remembering information. It’s about understanding and applying knowledge meaningfully.

Another issue is that periodical tests treat all students the same ignoring their unique learning styles and paces. Some students excel through hands-on activities or collaborative discussions while others do better with written tasks. Standardized test formats like multiple-choice and essays don’t always accommodate these differences making it harder to accurately reflect individual abilities.

Additionally, placing too much importance on test results can overshadow other valuable ways of assessing learning such as student feedback or project-based evaluations. Research shows that students can provide reliable input about what supports their learning. By encouraging self-reflection and allowing students to share their experiences, teachers can better adapt their methods to suit their needs.

(Friday & Monday)

Although DepEd 3rd periodical tests play an important role in assessing academic progress, they have significant limitations. Schools should consider incorporating alternative tools, such as self-assessments, student evaluations and goal-setting exercises to create a more balanced and accurate picture of learning. This approach would make assessments more meaningful and ensure they truly reflect each student’s potential.
