Assessment of Learning

Classroom assessment is changing due to shifts in learning theory and ideas about knowledge. These changes are leading to a new way of thinking about assessment that supports teaching and learning from a constructivist viewpoint.

The constructivist approach views learning as an active process where students make sense of new information. It contrasts with the old approach which considered learning as passive and reinforced mechanically. The new model is still developing and not fully applied in practice so it’s referred to as emergent.

Constructivists and cognitivists share some ideas about learning. They both agree that applying learning principles should reform curriculum and instruction. However, they differ in interpreting similar concepts. The key aspect of the new constructivist paradigm is that it merges both cognitive and social perspectives to explain how students develop knowledge.

Some ideas in this paradigm come from cognitive science focusing on mental processes. Other ideas come from anthropology focusing on social interactions and cultural meanings. The constructivist approach suggests that all knowledge is created by individuals. This applies both to general knowledge in different disciplines and to the development of cognitive structures in students’ minds.

In science for example, scientists don’t just discover natural laws. They construct hypotheses and interpretations. Similarly, individuals don’t merely absorb existing knowledge. Instead, they create their own understanding, systems for organizing information and ways to solve problems.

Learning is deeply connected to the social environment. Even though individuals must make an effort to understand what society endorses, learning can’t be separated from its social context. Constructivism emphasizes that knowledge building happens both within the mind and through interaction with others.

This new approach to assessment though still emerging holds promise for creating a more engaging and meaningful learning experience in the classroom.
