Lesson Planning
Teachers utilize various elements to develop effective lesson plans which serve as essential guidelines and prerequisites in teaching.
Primary competencies encompass the knowledge, attitudes and skills that students are expected to attain within each academic quarter. These broader skills are established in accordance with government regulations outlined in the curriculum. In the case of English education, main competencies comprise listening, reading, speaking, and writing, each further subdivided into specific sub-competencies. Subsequently, the syllabus and lesson plans are structured based on these primary and sub-competencies.
Basic competence refers to the achievement of the main competencies. It involves formulating fundamental competencies that are related to students’ roles, initial abilities and specific subjects or themes.
Indicators serve as observable behaviors or performances that can be utilized to assess the attainment of basic and primary competencies. These indicators encompass cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (attitude) aspects of student performance.
Objectives denote the processes and learning outcomes that learners are expected to accomplish based on the basic competencies. At the conclusion of a lesson, students should be able to fulfill these objectives which are derived from the basic competencies.
Materials encompass relevant theories, information, principles, and methodologies that align with the established objectives, students’ needs and allocated time. The selection of materials should be based on what students are expected to learn within the learning environment tailored to the specified objectives and students’ requirements.
Teaching activities can be divided into three stages. Firstly, the pre-teaching phase aims to inspire and capture students’ attention. Techniques like apperception can be employed during this phase. Secondly, the while-teaching phase focuses on the actual teaching and learning process aiming to achieve the basic competencies. This phase involves activities such as observation, critical thinking, exploration, association and communication. It is often structured and follows a scientific approach. Notably, observation enables students to learn through visual or auditory means.
Incorporating these components into teachers’ lesson plans can ensure that their teaching aligns with the mandated competencies and objectives. This comprehensive approach enhances the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process ultimately benefiting students and contributing to their overall educational experience.
