Selecting Contents for Effective Lesson Planning

For lesson plans to be effective, it is crucial to carefully choose the lesson content that will be taught. The vast and ever-growing body of scientific knowledge necessitates the use of specific criteria for content selection. There are two types of criteria that should be considered in selecting contents for effective lesson planning – these are psychological importance and logical importance.

Psychological importance refers to the significance of students’ learning experiences which allow them to process knowledge, procedures and skills in a coherent manner. Students must be able to connect their existing knowledge with new information in order to understand it and generate innovative ideas within their cognitive framework. Failure to establish these connections may result in superficial learning where students simply memorize information for short-term retention and quickly forget them. The content chosen for instruction should be relevant to students’ interests and needs, and should provide practical applications for understanding real-life situations and solving daily problems.

Logical importance on the other hand pertains to the logical structure of the subject matter. It involves distinguishing between essential and less important content. The content presented to students must be organized in a way that facilitates knowledge construction with a coherent internal structure that enables students to develop meaningful connections. Teachers should present the content in a logical and organized sequence. It is essential to incorporate interdisciplinary knowledge that goes beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries such as incorporating scientific principles into other subjects.

Once the content has been selected, it is important to organize the lesson plan in a manner that promotes the achievement of learning goals. There are three possible approaches to content organization: global, disciplinary, or interdisciplinary. The educational team responsible for planning should consider factors such as the coherence and continuity of the teaching and learning process as well as the psychological characteristics of the students and the practicality of the content. A global organization of content is suitable for the initial stage of primary education while an interdisciplinary approach should be adopted in the later stages. In secondary education, the curriculum should not be seen as a collection of isolated subjects but as an interconnected web of ideas. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach is particularly beneficial at this level.
