Lesson Planning: Core Content Curriculum Standards
In terms of knowledge or skill performance, a standard is a degree of performance. Being conscious of the distinction among content and procedural standards is a key pedagogical concept for comprehending national standards. Students should be familiar with the principles, theories, and problems covered by each discipline’s content standards.
The application of lower and higher order skills and procedures through a series of stages is what procedural standards are concerned with. The four fundamental arithmetic processes are compared, and problem-solving is required as one of the procedural standards in math. Students who major in language arts must talk and write for a variety of reasons, critically analyze texts, synthesize information, predict, and draw conclusions. Students must develop hypotheses, design experiments, compare objects, and analyze evidence in order to succeed in science. Students must compare locations, evaluate public problems, and analyze various points of view in social studies.
A lesson plan should include objectives for certain components, such as questions, practice (skills), and creation. An objective is a description of a student learning outcome (Performance Tasks). In order to provide a variety of lower and higher order learning experiences for students, Bloom’s Taxonomy is used as a guide when writing objectives.
This is how objectives are stated: “The students will be able to…” The verb that comes next describes the level of thinking that will occur as well as the student behavior.The objectives for the topic “RA 9262: The Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004” might include the following, using Bloom’s Taxonomy as an example: The students will be able to…
- Recall the date the RA 9262 was passed and list the rights it protects.
- Apply one of the RA 9262 to their own lives; examine Supreme Court decisions and explain their reasoning;
- Forecast what life may be like without the RA 9262;
- Create a poster with images and text denoting the three amendments; and
- Determine which amendment is the most significant and why.
Teachers should remember to refer back to the objectives when developing the student assignments and check to see that they are aligned if they write their objectives before writing the student learning experiences. The goals and learning exercises can both be changed as new and more profound concepts are discovered.
