Another recent assessment method that has gained a lot of popularity is the portfolio. When seen through the lens of public, accountable assessments, portfolio-based evaluations confront a number of significant challenges, such as rating accuracy and impartiality inquiries. However, portfolios can offer an organizing framework for teacher-student critiques and student self-reflections when used in classrooms solely for teaching and learning purposes. This promotes mastery goals that might not be addressed if the various coursework in the portfolio were completed separately.

It is more important to consider whether a portfolio framework can assist teachers and students in becoming more organized in their analysis of and acquiring knowledge from student work than would typically take place as part of classroom practices than whether portfolio assessments can be made to be as dependable and diligently equivalent as standardized measures within classrooms.

The distinctive qualities of portfolios as a teaching tool have been discussed in writing by a number of researchers. Writing portfolios’ distinguishing feature is reflection. Students set learning objectives, review their work and create selection criteria for some pieces over others, learn to assess the merits and shortcomings of their own work, and receive practice in articulating their goals and opinions to others through the creation of portfolios.

If given the chance to practice and gain experience, students can learn how to formulate and apply critical criteria. The objectives of portfolios included empowering students and assisting them in comprehending the procedures necessary to advance.

Students learn to apply criteria of scientific justification and get expertise with rational explanation, argument, and presenting procedures because to the portfolio culture that exists in classrooms today. The means of conceiving and organizing these classroom encounters are portfolios.

Uniform assignments and scoring standards are required for large-scale evaluation purposes. These limitations won’t just decrease the likelihood that instructional activities will meet the unique learning demands of every student; the high-stakes, evaluative framework may also undermine efforts to encourage students to take ownership of their own learning.

Even with a mandatory portfolio system, the development in students’ writing skills and the advantage teachers received from learning to grade portfolios are enough to justify their use. Instead than presuming that a single portfolio might properly fulfill both functions, there might be a purposeful interaction between portfolios built for formative and summative reasons.
