Teachers should generally employ a variety of assessment instruments, selecting the method of data gathering that best captures the expertise and skills that are desired in the context of use in each case. Utilizing tests and quizzes with a more conventional appearance may be necessary at times. As with other assessment methods, there should be a clear justification for adopting traditional assessment methods, both in terms of the structure of test questions and the demand-driven nature of test events.
For students to demonstrate their capacity to use narrative or scientific proof to back up an argument, essay questions, for instance, may still be the best option. Certain types of information processing may also be tested using the standard short-answer, multiple-choice, or fill-in-the-blank questions, provided that they are represented proportionately to their meaningful significance in the curriculum and not just because they are the simplest to assess.
Also, the learning objectives should dictate if and how often assessments should be given on request. Both research learners and trainees in teacher preparation frequently disagree on this issue. Why administer tests or conduct comprehensive examinations if you support assessment reform? The appropriate response is that different types of learning are supported and reflected by different types of classroom involvement, expanded projects, research reports, and tests, which in turn produce diverse types of evaluation data.
Tests show walking around knowledge, or the conceptual schemes and large ideas you should have in your mind without having to seek them up in a book or ask a colleague, assuming that the information has been modified in the methods stated above.
This means that structured exams for professional educators should focus on the knowledge that is needed in real-world situations, such as when a supervisor asks about your teaching philosophy, when you have to decide what to teach a class on the spot, when you have to defend your choice in front of the district advisory board, or when you have to explain student work and assessment results to a parent.
Similar to this, tests can be a reliable indicator of one’s professional knowledge if they incorporate the skills required to respond to inquiries from school board members, evaluate documents submitted to journals, come up with creative research design, speak spontaneously during a professional debate, and other similar tasks. This topic is expanded upon in a subsequent section on classroom culture, which emphasizes the need to inform students of the pedagogical justification for the balance of assessments selected and how they collectively represent the course’s learning objectives.
