It enables them to assess their peers’ understanding of the assessment criteria and how it should be applied to their work. Similar to teacher assessment, learners should only be evaluated and assessed based on the published assessment criteria. It is crucial for teachers to carefully manage peer assessment activities. Inappropriate management may result in public rankings that demotivate less able learners or fail to challenge high-performing learners, contradicting the principles of assessment for learning.
From peer assessment, learners can progress to self-assessment tasks. Self-assessment plays a pivotal role in the assessment for learning process and serves as a powerful teaching tool. Once learners become proficient in peer assessment, they can effectively apply these skills to objectively assess their own work. It may be easy to find flaws in others’ work but judging one’s own work is a more demanding task. However, when learners can assess their own work and identify gaps in their knowledge, it enhances their learning experience, promotes progress, and contributes to self-management of learning.
Teachers have a crucial role to play in facilitating self-assessment. They should provide opportunities for learners to reflect on their own work and offer the necessary support for learners to recognize shortcomings in their work. It is important for teachers to guide learners through the self-assessment process and ensuring that strengths in their work are duly acknowledged and weaknesses are not exaggerated to the extent of damaging learners’ self-esteem. To aid the self-assessment process, teachers may choose to present anonymous examples of previous learners’ work that meets or does not meet the assessment criteria. This exercise helps learners understand task requirements and enables them to apply lessons learned to their own work.
