Components of a K-12 Daily Lesson Log (DLL)

Learning Objectives

This section of the DLL encompasses goals related to both content knowledge and competencies. Lesson objectives outline the types of content knowledge and processes teachers aspire for their students to gain from instruction. These objectives articulate the behaviors or performances teachers aim for learners to demonstrate in order to be considered competent. They express what the teacher aims to teach and serve as a roadmap for teaching and evaluation.

Content Standards

This part pertains to learning-area specific facts, concepts, and procedures that students need to learn. Competencies, on the other hand, encompass the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students need to exhibit during a lesson. Competency codes are also recorded in this section of the DLL.

Subject Matter

This refers to the particular content that the lesson concentrates on.

Learning Resources

This component requires teachers to document the references and other learning materials they will use for the lesson. References include specific pages from the Teacher’s Guide (TG), Learner’s Module (LM), textbook, and additional resources from the Learning Resource Management and Development System (LRMDS) portal. “Other learning resources” encompasses materials like teacher-created content, authentic resources, and those not mentioned in the references. This part of the DLL can also cover supplies, equipment, tools, and non-print materials needed for activities before, during, and after the lesson.

Lesson Procedures

This section of the DLL consists of ten (10) parts, including:

a) Reviewing previous lessons or introducing the new lesson.
b) Establishing the lesson’s purpose to motivate learners.
c) Providing examples of the content and competencies.
d) Discussing new concepts leading to the first formative assessment.
e) Further discussing concepts and conducting the second formative assessment, deepening understanding and demonstrating new applications of learning.
f) Developing mastery, leading to the third formative assessment, often through individual work activities like writing, creative representations, dramatization, etc.
g) Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily life, bridging the lesson to real-world scenarios.
h) Formulating generalizations and abstractions about the lesson, using thought-provoking questions to crystallize learning and demonstrate skills.
i) Evaluating learning to assess if objectives are met.
j) Including additional activities for application or remediation based on formative assessments, providing enrichment or remedial tasks.

Delivery of DLL procedures can be flexible. Not all ten parts need to be covered in every lesson. What’s important is that the procedures lead to the attainment of stated objectives. The formative assessment methods guide whether lesson objectives are achieved. These ten parts should be spread across the week.

Remarks

In this part of the DLL, teachers note special cases such as extending the lesson to the following day due to re-teaching or time constraints, rescheduling the lesson due to class suspension, etc.

Reflection

Here, teachers are prompted to reflect and assess their effectiveness. They should record the number of learners who scored 80% in the evaluation, identify those needing additional remediation or ongoing remediation, evaluate the efficacy of the remedial lesson, outline successful teaching strategies and their reasons, and highlight any challenges that require assistance from their principal or supervisor.
