DepEd’s K-12 Daily Lesson Log: Guidelines for Effective Teaching

The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued guidelines for preparing the K-12 Daily Lesson Log (DLL) to make instructional planning a key part of the teaching and learning process in public schools. These guidelines help teachers organize and manage K-12 classrooms to better meet students’ needs. They encourage teachers to reflect on their teaching methods, which is essential for effective learning. Preparing the K-12 Daily Lesson Log is a core part of a teacher’s job as a facilitator of learning. Well-prepared lessons ensure high-quality teaching and learning.

The K-12 Daily Lesson Log is a template that DepEd teachers use to plan their daily lessons. It covers a day’s or a week’s worth of lessons and includes the following parts:

  1. Objectives: This section outlines the goals related to content knowledge and skills. According to Airasian (1994), lesson objectives describe the types of knowledge and processes teachers want students to learn. These objectives guide instruction and assessment by stating what the teacher aims to teach and the behaviors or performances expected from learners.
  2. Content: This section details the specific subject matter or topic of the lesson.
  3. Learning Resources: Here, teachers list the references and materials they will use for the lesson. These include textbook pages, additional materials from the LRMDS portal, teacher-made resources, and non-print materials needed for activities.
  4. Procedures: This part contains ten sections, starting with reviewing previous lessons or introducing new ones. It connects new content to learners’ prior knowledge and presents lessons systematically.
  5. Remarks: In this section, teachers note any special cases, such as continuing a lesson the next day due to time constraints or class suspensions.
  6. Reflection: Teachers reflect on and assess their effectiveness in this part. They note the number of learners who scored 80% or higher, those needing additional activities or remediation, the success of remedial lessons, effective teaching strategies, and any difficulties encountered that require support from principals or supervisors.

According to DepEd, the instructional process consists of three steps: planning instruction, delivering instruction, and assessing learning. This means teachers must plan their lessons, execute the plan, and measure its effectiveness.

By following these guidelines, teachers can ensure well-organized and effective instruction, ultimately enhancing the quality of education in public schools.
